OKBET Pro Billiard Series | GORST WINS PREDATOR PRO BILLIARD SERIES FARGORATE OHIO OPEN
Fedor Gorst defeated Roberto Gomez in the FargoRate Ohio Open to become the first player to win three Predator Pro Billiard Series titles, while his Filipino opponent has now lost in three series finals.
Gorst won the championship 4-2, 4-3 and avoided the shootout Gomez was fighting for until he scratched with the second set in sight. Gorst will get $25,000 and add the Ohio championship to those he won in Arizona in January of this year and August of 2021. Aloysius Yapp won the Seybert’s Michigan Open last month, joining Gorst in having two men’s Pro Billiard Series championships, although Gorst now has three; Kelly Fisher has won four Women’s Pro Billiard Series tournaments.
It’s another second-place finish for Gomez in the Predator Pro Billiard Series. Last year, he finished second here and in Michigan, and he came close to forcing a shootout in Saturday’s final at the Roberts Center in Wilmington, Ohio.
The first rack of the match was won by the Filipino before Gorst gained a 2-1 lead in the first set. When Gorst failed to barely cut the 7, Gomez pushed it back to 2-2, but a dry break forced Gorst to return to his chair. A 7/10 combination got the former World Champion to the opening set’s hill, and he raced the following rack to establish a 1-0 lead at the halfway point.
Gorst had the first rack of the second set, but when he couldn’t leap the 1, it appeared like Gomez would have an opening. The Filipino, though, missed a long 9, and Gorst capitalized to take a 2-0 lead.
With the match sliding away from him, Gomez needed something, and his opponent’s dry break presented an opportunity to cut the score in half. Gomez made no mistakes this time, running the fourth rack to tie the set at 2-2. The Filipino then took the lead for the first time since the opening rack of the match, making it 3-2 and one rack away from a shootout.
After the break, a 1/10 carom presented itself, giving him an urgent opportunity to finish the set, but Gomez was unable to use it. Gorst then sent the 1 on to Gomez, who failed on the 3 as a result. Gorst returned after that, and he leveled the set with a 9/10 combo with no more mistakes.
Gomez received the table after a dry break, but he struggled to manage the speed of the cue and scratched on the number 4. As a result, Gorst had a chance to clear for the game, and the table was free when he utilized the 8 to direct the 5 into the top corner. To collect his third trophy in this competition, the two-time Pro Billiard Series champion cleaned the table.
Gorst remarked, “It’s been a full rollercoaster
I didn’t play my best game, particularly in the final, but this is nearly always the case. The competition has been intense; I’ve been in a bunch of shootouts and have come close to losing twice, against Alex Kazakis and Sullivan Clark.
Gorst defeated Denis Grabe of Estonia 4-0 and 4-0 in less than an hour, a far cry from the shootout victory he had achieved against Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz on Friday in the quarterfinal. Eklent Kaci was Gomez’s penultimate obstacle before the final.
The Albanian won the first set 4-2; however, Gomez won the second set 4-1 to force a shootout. After making their first three free throws in the goal, both players missed their fourth attempt. Kaci then missed again, and Gomez scored to advance to the championship game.
In conjunction with the CueSports International Caribbean Expo, the last Predator Pro Billiard Series competitions of 2022 will be held in Puerto Rico from November 15 to November 22. The Predator World 8-Ball Championship and the Predator World Junior 9-Ball Championships will come after the Medalla Light Puerto Rico Open and Women’s Open.
