OKBET US Open Pool | VAN BOENING IS OUT AND ONLY 16 ARE LEFT AT US OPEN POOL CHAMPIONSHIP

With only 16 players left at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City going into the last two days of play, Shane Van Boening was eliminated from the 2022 US Open Pool Championship after losing a hill-hill match to Alexander Kazakis.

Van Boening began the day seeking for a record-breaking sixth US Open victory.

Van Boening started the day aiming for a record-breaking sixth US Open, but the champagne had to stay on the shelf for at least another year. The World Champion approached Kazakis in full-throttle mode as the Greek racked up a 5-0 lead over the legendary American without pausing. In recent matches versus Van Boening, Kazakis has had mixed results. He won the 2021 World Pool Masters final in a rout before losing to him in the World Pool Championship semifinals back in April.

Kazakis became disoriented in the midst of the game as Van Boening fought back to tie at 5-5 and then quickly take the lead at 7-5 with a chance to ascend the hill first. But Van Boening’s scratch on the break allowed Kazakis to tie the score at 7-7. In the following rack, Van Boening was the first to the hill after Kazakis missed the two ball.

However, it was not going to be one of those days. Returning to the table at 8-8 and breaking for the match, Kazakis was caught when attempting to make the two ball. After Kazakis made one bank, the way was open for him to sprint out and earn a spectacular victory. Van Boening must have to wait, but there is still hope because tomorrow afternoon will see the conclusion of the first SVB Junior Open.

Jayson Shaw was defeated 9-2 by Lee Vann Corteza in the final 64, and Albin Ouschan was defeated by Wojciech Szewczyk. One of the stage’s biggest tales came from Table 1 live on Matchroom Pool Facebook, when Tyler Styer asserted his claim for a Mosconi Cup berth on Team USA by eliminating Fedor Gorst’s chances of moving on 9-7. David Alcaide lost to Ko Ping Chung 9-5. Styer’s performance was historic, but in order to advance to the Last 16 he had to defeat Joshua Filler. Aloysius Yapp, who finished second the previous year, was stunningly defeated 9-1 by Sanjin Pehlivanovic.

Skyler Woodward will feel conflicted after today’s events because Chang Jung-Lin, the two-time Mosconi Cup MVP who occasionally went on a rampage in a 9-4 victory, defeated him. However, with the results going his way, the Kentucky Kid guaranteed a Mosconi Cup automatic spot rather than relying on Jeremy Jones’ wild card picks. Prior to his 9-2 loss against Marc Bijsterbosch, Greg Hogue was also in the running for an automatic berth in the Mosconi Cup. Oscar Dominguez, who will compete in the Mosconi Cup for the first time in five years based on the Live Nineball World Rankings, was pleased with the news.

Before he even faced Ralf Souquet in the Last 64, Francisco Sanchez Ruiz had a day to remember. The Spaniard secured the second automatic spot off the Live Nineball World Rankings as a result of Ouschan’s loss to Szewczyk, and he knew he would be making his Mosconi Cup debut for Team Europe from November 30 to December 3. To get to the Last 16, Sanchez Ruiz defeated Souquet and Wu Kun Lin.

Styer’s adventure came to an end when he was defeated by Mosconi Cup rival Filler, putting his chances for the trophy in Jones’ hands. Before the World Pool Masters winner pulled away to a 9-6 victory, the American put up a valiant performance to push Filler all the way.

The reigning champion Carlo Biado will face Konrad Juszczyszyn in his quest for the title in consecutive years. Biado defeated Naoyuki Oi 9-6 in a rematch of last year’s semifinal.

Chris Melling, who is having something of a resurgence at the Diamond Arena, will keep the Union Jack of Great Britain flying tomorrow. Melling defeated Joven Bustamante 9-4 before defeating Badar Alawadhi 9-1. Tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET, The Magician’s matchup versus Corteza will be the first game on TV.
