On the second day of competition at the 2022 US Open Pool Championship, Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City, Shane Van Boening averted a scare against rising sensation Joey Tate on his path to Winners’ Qualification.
Tate gave Van Boening trouble early on in his quest for a record-breaking sixth US Open victory, pushing the veteran all the way. Tate entered the match with little anticipation for what would transpire, and he took the lead on many occasions to push Van Boening to the fringes of the losers’ side of the draw. Tate was at the table with the score 7-7 and appeared to be having a simple run out ahead when he potted the incorrect ball, giving Van Boening the ball in hand. Van Boening then reached the hill but only managed a scratch on the break.
Tate was unable to capitalize as Van Boening eventually won at 9–7
Fans filled the Waterfront Center at Harrah’s Resort to the gills with famous faces as they took in the action. With two victories and only four racks lost throughout the course of the day, Chang Jung-Lin made quick work of his day. Albin Ouschan and Mario He made it without incident to Winners Qualification. Johann Chua defeated Brandon Shuff 9-7 in the first round before destroying Nick Ekonomopoulos 9-2 to go to the Last 64 and face the tantalizing matchup with Ko Pin Yi.
Dimitri Jungo and Jeff De Luna’s journey came to an end. Jungo was defeated by Ke Wu.
Acton will resume tomorrow at 10 a.m. ET with Ko Pin Yi taking against Chua for a position in the Last 64 before 2019 winner Joshua Filler makes his TV debut this week at 11:30 a.m. ET live on the Matchroom Pool Facebook Page. Before Carlo Biado, the reigning champion, takes on Joven Bustamante at Table 2, Kristina Tkach faces off against Tate.
